If you see any of the termites walking around, collect some, put them in a glass jar with a preservative, 8 parts methylated spirits to 2 parts water. This is preserve them, so the species can be identified. Only a few species in the Sydney area are capable of severely damaging wood and cellulose products in your building.

Do not disturb the area any further as disturbance can cause the termites to leave the area temporarily. They can return at any time or may attack another part of the building and may not be found until obvious damage has been done.

DID YOU KNOW...

1 in 3 Australian homes are attacked at some time during their lives by these ruinous insects

Termites, or white ants as they are commonly known, cause serious structural damage to timber and other cellulose based products. The most common pest species in the Sydney area is Coptotermes acinaciformis, a termite capable of producing colonies with over one million individual termites and is in fact regarded as the MOST DESTRUCTIVE termite species in the World.

The most commonly encountered pest termites causing DAMAGE to BUILDINGS are SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES.

  • Living in large underground nests, nests in trees, stumps in the ground, wooden sleeper retaining walls and garden beds, filled areas under patios, bathrooms, laundries etc.
  • They travel through the soil to reach timber in contact with the ground.
  • They build earthen shelter tubes to gain access to above ground timber in your home or building.
  • Once inside timber the worker termite chews up the timber to feed the rest of the colony.
  • This often leaves timbers hollow inside and structurally unsound.

An extensive Australian Standard, A.S. 3660 series - 2000 - Termite Management - gives guidelines for home owners, builders and pest managers on subterranean termite management.

The Building Code of Australia which is administered by Local Government authorities requires various measures be taken when your home is built. These can vary from area to area.

There is no system that can gaurantee to prevent termite entry to your building

Termites may gain undetected entry if you do not take basic steps to help maintain the defences to your home, buildings or structures, that have been put in place.
